SD vs HD vs 4K — What Resolution Should You Broadcast In?
Understanding Broadcast Resolutions
Resolution refers to the number of pixels in your video — more pixels means a sharper, more detailed image. The three main options for broadcast channels are SD (Standard Definition), HD (High Definition), and 4K (Ultra High Definition).
SD — Standard Definition (576i / 480i)
Resolution: 720×576 (PAL) or 720×480 (NTSC)
SD is the old analogue TV standard. It looks noticeably blurry on modern screens and is rarely used for new channels. The main reasons to use SD:
- Very low bandwidth requirements (under 1 Mbps)
- Compatible with older IPTV systems
- Reduces storage requirements significantly
Verdict: Only use SD if you have extremely limited bandwidth or are distributing to legacy systems.
HD — High Definition (720p / 1080p)
Resolution: 1280×720 (720p) or 1920×1080 (1080p)
HD is the current standard for most broadcast channels. 1080p in particular offers excellent image quality that looks great on any modern screen.
- Bandwidth: 2–4 Mbps (720p), 4–8 Mbps (1080p)
- Storage: Manageable — 1 hour of 1080p ≈ 4–8 GB
- Compatibility: Works on all modern devices and platforms
- Viewer expectation: HD is now the minimum viewers expect
Verdict: 1080p HD is the sweet spot for most channels. It looks excellent, doesn't require enormous bandwidth, and works everywhere.
4K — Ultra High Definition (2160p)
Resolution: 3840×2160
4K offers stunning detail — four times the resolution of 1080p. However, it comes with significant trade-offs:
- Bandwidth: 15–25 Mbps per stream
- Storage: 1 hour of 4K ≈ 40–80 GB
- Encoding power: Requires a high-end PC (i9 or Ryzen 9 recommended)
- Viewer devices: Not all viewers have 4K screens or fast enough internet
Verdict: 4K is impressive for premium or future-proofed channels, but overkill for most community broadcasters. Consider it when your audience and infrastructure are ready.
What InstaPlayout Recommends
For most users starting out:
- YouTube / Facebook streaming: 1080p at 6–8 Mbps
- IPTV distribution: 720p or 1080p depending on your provider's requirements
- 4K content: InstaPlayout supports 4K playback, but we recommend streaming at 1080p
Conclusion
Start with 1080p HD. It looks professional, works on all platforms, and doesn't strain your internet connection or hardware. You can always upgrade to 4K later as your channel grows.
